Waiting for Daddy

IMG_0359

Josh has been away for 5 days now, in New York working on a story. The first 2 mornings he wasn't here, I went to get Lila in her room, changed her diaper, and set her on the floor, and she immediately scampered into our room, saying, "Da Da? Da Da!" He often hides behind doors and walls to surprise her, so she wasn't convinced he wasn't there until she'd checked every corner.

The second morning, after the same routine, she was dejectedly following me out to the kitchen when she heard Popsie's voice in there and assumed it was Josh. She bolted ahead of me, and again seemed crushed - no offense to Popsie, whom she is quite fond of - to see that Josh wasn't in there too, crouched behind a chair, ready to pop out and tickle and kiss her.

Now she has figured out that he's not there, so she doesn't have the same optimism when she sets out of her room in the morning, but I can tell she's hoping that a surprise awaits. She still looks at me expectantly when we walk into an empty room and he's not there. She still says "Da Da," and points to his pictures on the fridge and smiles. She still looks behind furniture, wondering where he could be.

Two more days and Daddy will be home.
