Wrangling babies

In these, enjoy how neither Lila nor Li Li is looking at the camera at the same time. Also, check out Lila's cool jacket from China.

Cousins!

Lila and I went to Providence this weekend to meet cousin Li Li, who arrived last Monday. Her parents are still suffering from some serious fatigue as they attempt to adjust their daughter to a 13 hour time change, but they are told that conventional wisdom says they have another week of suffering. Li Li seems no worse for the wear - she's happy and energetic and engaged...she just chooses not to sleep from one to four AM.

Here are some pictures from Sunday.

There are more pictures to come. I've been having some trouble with Blogger and have been unable to login, so that's the only reason these are slow to be posted.

Addendum

(A nice photo of Uncle David, Lila, Julia and Pop Pop from New Years)

Just in case anyone thought that The Dullest Story Ever Told has faded into lore, think again. I tell "Cousins Get Dressed and Go To School" about six times a day. If I told it as often as she wanted, I would never have the chance to speak of anything else.

When, when, when will we never speak of this again?

She's feeling much better today. Fever gone, and at least twice today she was discovered running in circles while yelling, "I'm running in a circle! I'm running in a circle! Look at me! Wheee!"

It's cold out there...

(Lila, in a happier mood)

...But you could fry an egg on our poor girl's forehead. She's sick and cranky. Amusing anecdotes currently on hold.

Here's a little game we play...

"Lila, be happy!"

"Lila, be sad!"

"Lila, be surprised!"

"Lila, be angry!"

"Lila, be a pencil!"

(We don't know what this means either.)

New haircut.

(Barton Fink)

Lila's hair was turning toward Barton Fink territory, so we took her to the overpriced but convenient children's haircutting salon around the corner.

Gina, the hairstylist, asked what look I was going for. "Short," I said, "but cute. Jean Seberg? Amelie?" "Gotcha," said Gina, and my love of Brooklyn deepened another notch into my heart.

Lila sat in the salon chair, and the assistant asked her what she would like to watch on her little television. "We have Elmo, The Little Mermaid, Pocahontas, anything!"

"Want Dorothy," Lila said. The woman looked a little confused. "She wants Wizard of Oz," I said, as interpreter. "Oh, we have that," she said, and popped it in.

When Gina came over to cut Lila's hair, she tried to engage Lila in a little small talk, but Lila was too busy tracking Toto on her TV. Gina took her to be a nonverbal type, but then happened to ask her if she liked The Wizard of Oz. "That's Dorothy," Lila said, pointing to the TV. "And that's Toto, he's her dog. They go dancing down the yellow road. And the Scarecrow is her friend. And the Tin Man - he dances. And there is a lion too. He sad. And the witch, she green and she laugh. And Dorothy has apples for bessert, but the trees are mad--"

"Well, I guess she can talk," said Gina, over the monologue that continued without any need for an audience.

The end result: cute.

See for yourself.

A few surprises

"Hey, John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt is MY name too!"

"Is that BIRTHDAY CAKE?"

"You put WHAT in your mouth?"

"I can watch Bear in Blue Big House ALL DAY?"
