Does this man look relaxed?

IMG_0372

Just thought I'd post 3 of the 4 total photographs we took on our 48-hour soujourn to the O.C. The one above is the only printable one that actually documents either of us enjoying the resort facility (the other one, predictably, is of Josh sticking out his tongue and making an obscene gesture. Because that joke never, ever gets old*.). And "enjoying" isn't the first thing you think of when you look at Josh's expression. He looks more like a hostage being photographed for a ransom note, trying to reassure his family that everything is fine.

First I should explain that because Josh and I are both more uptight than carefree, we tend not to photograph each other on vacation. Rather, we take pictures of views, or we forget to take pictures at all. We're just not the types to say to each other, "Hey, take a picture of me doing THIS!" or "Hold on, smile, and I'll immortalize you forever!"

You reasonably postulate, "but can't a photo be something less portentious?" Of course it can. But we just don't know how.

Above is the view from our room. The sun shone in a cloudless sky for every possible moment. That's a little sectional sofa to the left, a king size bed out of view, and a bathroom almost as large as the room itself. When we arrived, we ate our strawberries dipped in chocolate on the balcony and marveled at our good - albeit costly - fortune.

And above, here, is the view itself from our 4th floor balcony. When you arrived at the pool below, an attendant vaporized at your shoulder and offered to set up a lounge chair for you - which entailed unfolding and securing a special chair-fitting towel, placing a bottle of water within arm's reach, and offering you the "spa" menu. Further out from the pool was a hot tub, a fire pit, and a full spa. There were paths running along the rim of the cliff, with tasetful benches strategically placed for optimum dolphin-watching, as well as beach access to get even closer the crashing surf.

All in all, we took full advantage. We exercised, we swam, we walked along the beach at sunset, we played gin by the fireplace, we ate exotic food, we stayed in bed late and read the paper. We just don't have any proof. But we had a lovely time. We swear.

* And by "never, ever" I mean "absolutely, yes it does."
