This little piggy moved to Brooklyn!

2006_1031_191039

We are settling in to our new home, which Lila calls, "Lila's Special House". We walk down the street and she points to all the brownstones and says, "someone lives there, and there, and there, and there, and there...."

We will be up and running soon with reports from the hood.

Happy Belated New Year!

This is from Rosh Hoshanah.

Lila is still talking about touching the torah. Made quite the impression.

The Book of Lila.

IMG_0629

If "Belle of the Ball" wasn't a mutually exclusive concept to Yom Kippur, it would have been the phrase on the tip of everyone's tongue at the Leo Baeck temple for chilldren's services on last Monday afternoon.

IMG_0640

Lila, who was still breathing the giddy fumes from Rosh Hoshanah services the week before (touching the torah, hearing the shofar, and seeing a rabbi dressed up and acting like a silly king), came to the more somber Yom Kippur services in high spirits.

IMG_0637

And Yom Kippur did not disappoint. Once again there was dancing, a rabbi in costume, and some other kids to scream with. From an entertainment perspective (which is hardly the point, I know) children's services are the way to go.

IMG_0630

People were stopping us left and right to comment on Lila's adorable dress, a birthday gift from Aunt Catherine and Uncle Thom. It was a real show stopper. One woman in our aisle actually said, "I'm sorry, I know I sound like a crazy person because this is the third time I'm saying it, but that is the cutest little girl I have ever seen!"

IMG_0641

(At some point, we hope to display some modesty vis a vis Lila. Maybe next week.)

Our little autocrat.

IMG_0559

A two year old child is a uniquely sticky wicket, caught between exponential brain development and a short fuse for whatever she can't yet grasp. Case in point: She is old enough to know that her birthday is a special day where we celebrate her, but because she doesn't understand the passage of time, there is no convincing her that it is over.

IMG_0562

Every day since last Thursday, she demands to know where her presents are, and when her cake will be served. Not in a petulant, spoiled way, just in that stubbornly plaintive toddler way. Toddlers like their routines, and presents and cake are a a much more fun routine than brushing teeth and putting toys away.

IMG_0561

So every package, from a grocery bag, to a moving box, is presumed to be an unopened present. "This is for Lila?" she asks about everything with a top on it.

IMG_0560

And for Rosh Hoshanah on both Friday and Saturday night we lit candles before dinner, and as we did, Lila would just chirp in the background, "cake? Cake? Cake for Lila?"

IMG_0557

Which is not to say that she isn't thrilled with her birthday booty. New books, lots of pretend picnic food, her new birthday sweater, her doll stroller - all these are mentioned constantly and in are in heavy playing rotation. It's just funny to have a person who is more and more verbally competent by the day, but has no tolerance for logic or reasoning.

If she keeps this up, she could be running the country by Christmas.

Happy Birthday, Lila Quinn!

IMG_0580

It was two years ago this morning, 16 days after her due date, 36 hours after checking into the hospital, following two doses of Cytotec, an entire bag of Pitocin, and a too-late-and-not-that-effective epidural, that I managed to push our 9 lb. 3 oz. baby out.

"Ouch" doesn't even begin to cover it.

IMG_0568

The first thing the doctor said was, "Look at those eyelashes!"

IMG_0570

The second thing the doctor said was, "She may be a nine pound baby, but that's a ten pounder's head!"

IMG_0574

I remember that we decided to name her before we left the delivery room. We had been leaning toward Ellie, but when it came time to choose, we both agreed on Lila Quinn. It would be months before I could say her name without feeling my eyes well up at the thought of that moment.

IMG_0573

She was born around 9 AM, and that night I sent Josh home to sleep, with Lila next to me. When she awoke at 3 AM, I couldn't calm her. In retrospect, it seemed like she didn't STOP crying until she was four months old.

But after she was great.

IMG_0575

And now we've got this little person in our lives who says new little things every day like, "I'm happy!" and "I like cake!"

IMG_0583

So today, to celebrate, we all had cake.

And we are all very, very happy.

The inner workings of family life.

IMG_0542

Lila does not like to have her teeth brushed. They would have rotted and fallen out by now were it not for Josh's feverish dedication to her dental hygene, that, to be perfectly honest, needs to be monitored, lest it make the tiny leap into unbridled mania.

IMG_0540

The nightly task is replete with systems (daddy brushes daddy's teeth; Lila brushes Lila's teeth; Lila brushes daddy's teeth, and finally, the one that really counts, daddy brushes Lila's teeth), rituals (The oft-repeated mantra, so sacred that it could become Passover's fifth question: "Lila, when do we brush our teeth?" "Every! Night!"), pleading ("Just a little bit more! Just...a...little...bit...more...and...Done!") and endless praise ("Hooray! Hooray for Lila! Hooray for Lila's squeaky clean incisors!").

IMG_0541

And though I rib him for it, Josh's consist and measured assurances are the very model of good parenting, in my mind. The two of them battling it out in the bathroom every night is a microcosm of the constant negotiations upon which parenting is based. Push too far and you breed resentment and fear. Back off too quickly and you hand over the reins. It's reassuring to see the cogs of progress so plainly at work.

And I won't go anywhere near the task, myself, so...someone's got to do it.

Surprise! We're moving.

IMG_0401

The big news in our house is that we are moving back East - and soon! We had thought we wouldn't be able to move before early December, but a wonderful apartment materialized in the most serendipitious manner. Now the movers will come on October 16th, and we'll settle in Brooklyn some time before Halloween.

Here's the story.

We had found the listing for an upper duplex of a brownstone through a parents' group I'm on, and so we sent our friends Karen and Dulcy to meet the landlords for us, and check the place out. They reported back that the apartment would work perfectly for us. It even had a washer and dryer, which is hard to come by inside an apartment - most realtors told us we'd be lucky to find a shared one in a building basement.

Karen described the block as "iconic Brooklyn" and "criminally leafy." Karen and Dulcy live right near by, as well a smattering of other friends. And Josh's cousin Isabel and her husband Mark are also just a few blocks away.

IMG_0399

We tried not to get too excited about it, but after Karen sent the pictures, we couldn't help but pin our hopes on getting it.

So we called the owners, Betty and Saul, a married couple with grown children living with their own families nearby, and made our pitch. We even sent the link to this blog so that they could see that we were pleasant enough, ordinary folks (who, granted, are a little obsessed with their criminally adorable daughter, to borrow Karen's phrasing). The owners were very kind and polite, but made the decision that any other landlord would do in their position - they decided to give the apartment to a couple whom they had met in person.

We were crestfallen.

For about three hours.

IMG_0398

Then we got a call from Betty to say that the strangest thing had happened. Her daughter-in-law had spontaneously stopped by the apartment in the afternoon, and Betty had relayed the drama of the day, and the outcome of their decision about whom they would rent the apartment to. Betty happened to mention where Josh worked, and the daughter-in-law inquired about his name. When Betty told her, she said, "I went to Hebrew school with Josh! Our mothers are still very good friends!"

Not only was the daughter-in-law Lynn, from Josh's hometown, but I had actually met her myself. Lynn is married to a rabbi, and when we were still in New York, we had attended services at her husband's temple. So we had also met Betty's son!

IMG_0400

And, if that weren't enough of a coincidence, apparently Josh's mom had told him about this apartment becoming available a couple of months ago, but he forgot.

He will - rightfully - never live that down.

So Betty was calling us back to tell us that if we still wanted the apartment, it was ours.

And we danced around our apartment, like ninnies!

IMG_0402

And so our time here - two years, and three months - is done. Lila, who turns two on Thursday, is about to become a New Yorker.

My parents left Pasadena when I was two and a half and moved to New England. I have fuzzy memories of our backyard, the view of the mountains, a pet turtle, and the 1972 earthquake that sent us packing. I do wonder what, if anything, Lila will remember of Southern California. I have complicated feelings about our time here, but not necessarily about the place itself; the weather, the healthy lifestyle, the environmental priorities, are all admirable. And we have certainly met and know people here that we will miss.

But it turns out I'm not the relentless adventurer I imagined myself to be before I had Lila. I don't want to challenge every boundary I encounter. I want to live in a more familiar world, and for us, right now, that's New York City.

As for Lila, little does she know what awaits her with winter, subways, alternate-side parking, stairs, and skyscrapers. She'll meet lots of old friends for the first time, get to see a lot more of her grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, and discover the city that, to her parents, feels like home.

We can't wait.

Katy stops by.

There are few people Lila warms to immediately, but our friend Katy is one of them. Above and beyond her kid-friendly personality, it probably doesn't hurt that Katy has a cat, too. A very fluffy cat. Here are a couple pictures from her last visit, sans cat.

Asked and answered.

IMG_0229
(random photo with no connection to story below)

I came home this afternoon from errands just as Lila was finishing her lunch. We had the following conversation:

Me: Lila! How are you?
Lila: I'm good!
Me: Did you go to the park with Eva?
Lila: Yes.
Me: What did you do there?
Lila: I went on the swing!

From there it got choppy and toddlerish, but for a few short sentences, I saw our future. Mommy asks questions! Lila answers! Jokes are told! Stories are recounted! Lessons are learned! I nearly swooned at her approaching capacity to carry on a real conversation.

Ruminations on a squirrel, unseen.

IMG_0324

This morning at breakfast on the patio, Lila was hoping to see the squirrel who makes regular appearances in our yard, usually in the tree branches. He didn't show, but she had a lot to say about him over the course of our meal. Direct quotes:

"He up high."

"He naked."

IMG_0321

"He sitting down."

"He eating breakfast too."

IMG_0322

"He with Aunt Carol."

"He with another squirrel."

IMG_0323

"He like coffee."

"He like cereal."

"He pretty."

Big Hair, Big Heart.

We usually tamp down Lila's mane in the morning with a barrette or a head-topper "ponytail" (not entirely an accurate description, but she likes to call it that), but one night around dinner time we decided to unfurl the curls and see how poofy it really was if we brushed it out.

IMG_0337

Look familiar? Just as we suspected, it was "The Kramer" was in full effect:

Bad hair never looked so cute.
